MARCH 3, 1879 THE TRM 111111111 Him The World's Smallest Daily Newspaper, Seth M. Vining, Editor. Vol. 15. Est. 1-31-28 TRYON. N. C., FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1942 CLAIMS RECORD FOR VEGETABLE FREAK Edwin “Sam” Wilson of Lynn, in growing his Victory Garden, lays claim to having produced the most extraordinary plants in the county. Mr. Wilson went to his garden to dig some potatoes, and upon examination of the plants, found that they were producing tomatoes also. He carefully examined one of the tomatoes growing on the potato plants and found them to he normally fruited. Old-time farmers were astonish ed at the sight of such a vegetable. The Lynn gardener was asked if he had attempted to graft the plants, and he replied: “There is not a tomato plant in several hun dred yards of the' potato patch. As for grafting, well I don’t know the first step.” One housewife in the section, opined that: “Complete soup stock is growing in the one vegetable.” A patriotic gardener drawled, “Since Victory Gardens are the order of the day, and full produc tion expected of the industries, the plants have decided to do over time work for the war effort.” Anyway, the fact above proves something beyond a doubt.
